The Future of LASACT

LASACT is working on several projects that are in different stages of development. Although we cannot promise that each one will blossom, we believe that addiction professionals will be interested in knowing where we are heading.

  • Development of an Educational Offerings Curriculum and Schedule so that Counselors and Preventionists around the state can plan when and where they want to get their certification and recertification education hours. The Louisiana Addiction Counselor Training (LACT) Program offering 180 hours of substance abuse specific training opened in April, 2006 and has graduated over 150 potential counselors since then.

  • Development of standards and a Credential for Substance Abuse Technicians. This credential would recognize individuals who are required by the demands of their employment to understand and utilize a specific body of knowledge related to substance abuse treatment but who do not want to be Certified Counselors.
  • Researching development of the Peer Recovery Service Specialist credential to assist recovering addicts in their recovery process and to help prevent relapse.

  • Identifying and meeting the needs of Organizational Members and encouraging this type of membership for substance abuse treatment agencies, businesses, civic groups, and other organizations that are interested in supporting advancement of Substance Abuse Prevention and Counseling, and Compulsive Gambling Counseling.

  • Instituting Computer Based Testing (CBT) which will be available on demand. Late 2011 is the projected start-up date for CBT.
